Are you receiving pension credit? Then you could qualify for free loft insulation or cavity wall insulation. Insulation grants for pensioners are available for many homeowners and private tenants. Even if you don’t receive Pension Credit, you may still be eligible; insulation grants for pensioners are also available for over 60s who are on Working Tax Credits.
Insulation grants for pensioners - the basics
The grants are only available for improving the insulation in your home. Perhaps you live in a house that was built between 1924 and 1982. In that case, there's a very good chance that you have cavity walls. The insulation grants for pensioners scheme would cover the cost of cavity wall insulation. The result: cheaper heating bills and a cosier home.
Or maybe you can take advantage of the free loft insulation scheme for pensioners. If attics and roofs are not properly insulated, you could be losing hundreds of pounds worth of heat through your roof every year.
Insulating your roof is an excellent way of cutting your heating bills and will help you heat your home much more efficiently. The free loft insulation for pensioners scheme doesn't just keep heating bills down, it saves you the time, effort and cost of taking care of insulating your roof yourself. It is a very fiddly job - and best left to the experts. So if you qualify, make sure you take advantage.
So how do you know if you're eligible?
As long as you meet these criteria you can apply for an insulation grant:
- You own your own home or are a tenant living in privately rented accommodation
- You’re in receipt of Pension Guarantee Credit*
- You're in receipt of Working Tax Credit
- Live in England, Scotland or Wales.
*This can be in combination with or without Pension Savings Credit, however those who receive just Savings Credit alone may not qualify.
All you have to do now is enter your postcode at the top of the page. That will get the application process underway. One of our friendly customer service team will call you back. We’ll talk you through the process and find the insulation experts in your area who can help you.
We understand that some pensioners may find the process of applying online difficult. So if you need any help, do please ask . Alternatively you can ask a family member, carer or friend to apply on your behalf. If you’re in privately rented accommodation you’ll need your landlord’s permission before applying.
Before you apply please make sure you have the following available:
- Pension Credit or Working Tax Credit paperwork.
- Landlord contact details if you are a private tenant.
We will need this information before we can proceed with your application.
Who funds the insulation grants for pensioners?
The scheme is funded by the so-called Big Six energy companies. It's called the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme and, as well as helping you keep your home warm, it helps the government meet its energy saving targets.
Improving home insulation for low income households and pensioners is a good way to help them meet their targets and reduce the amount of wasted energy from heating that escapes through roofs and walls.
Free loft insulation for pensioners and 100% insulation grants aren't guaranteed
You may have to make a contribution towards the cost of the work, but we can let you know when we check your eligibility.
Do be reassured that there will not be any hidden costs of any kind. Any attending companies will complete a survey of your property first and will advise you if there are any extra costs, before going ahead with any work. So there’s no need to worry about getting a bill you weren’t expecting. You are not obliged to have the work carried out if you are not happy with any aspect of the process.
